Always A Bridesmaid, Never A Bride

Categories Fashion

Opening in theatres today, 27 Dresses is the new romantic-comedy featuring (Katherine Heigl, KH) a woman who is always a bridesmaid and never a bride. Although I’ve heard good things about KH and her acting, I’ve not seen her in anything~ no, not even Grey’s Anatomy.
I did however; see a clip of this movie and there were some pretty nasty looking bridesmaids’ dresses in her closet. Now, I know no one on God’s green earth is forced to wear dresses like these in real life…are they? (I guess if I think about it, I have a not-so pretty in pink, off the shoulder number hanging around somewhere.)
If you’ve been a bridesmaid that had to wear a less-than-gorgeous dress, by all means, share!  Email me a photo (you don’t have to be in it). We’ll post the top 2.
OK~ this is fun. The website of 27 Dresses has an interactive tool called build a bridesmaid dress. Upload your photo and then dress yourself (or someone else) and email them the final look. Seriously, aside from quite possibly being a complete waste of your time, it might actually facilitate your efforts in looking for the perfect dress, fit, color, style, etc. Try it. If nothing else, it’ll be fun.
Don’t forget to turn in photos of your dresses!!!!!!!!

Why Would You Want A Vintage-Style Wedding?

Categories Fashion

One of my favorite things to do in the entire world is to wake up early on Saturday morning, curl up on the couch with my coffee, my husband (yes, in that order) and watch a classic movie. With no cell phones ringing, I can immerse myself into old Hollywood glam, edgy writing, or shadowy scenes that leave so much to my imagination. Transported outside my living room to a by-gone time that I have no real-life experience with, I recognize the style, grace, charm, wit and spice… these movies so often embody.

Do images of yesteryear resonate, leaving you wondering whether a vintage-style wedding is right for you?
The difference between Vintage clothing vs. Antique clothing
According to Catherine Owsianiecki author of A Crash Course in Vintage Shopping, antique is pre-1920’s clothing and vintage clothing is from the 1920’s-1970’s.
What is your style? Do you start to get charged up when you hear terms like ivory silk satin, Chantilly lace and cream organza? Do button gloves, silk-tulle veils and cultured pearls do anything for you? I feel like I should be capitalizing these items as proper nouns…because of the luxuriousness of materials.  Such delicate, exquisite and detailed workmanship would probably cost a fortune to make today.
Why would anyone want to have a vintage style wedding?
Again, what is your style? Is this you? If I’m piquing your interest and your not sure which era you love best, check out VintageGown.com a site that also features amazing photographs of gowns, etc. in all the eras.
Lean toward 70’s Bohemian? 60’s elegant? 50’s feminine? 30-40’s glamour?
Are you getting married in an historical area that could only be enhanced by the gorgeousness of a vintage gown, accessories and/or accents?
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear your ideas and plans for a vintage wedding!!!
p.s. I think I‘ll try and see if there’s a good Barbara Stanwyk movie on for this Saturday.

Here’s an inspiration board I put together to illustrate in concept, some of the top wedding trends of 2008.
It’s a new year and with it, a new set of wedding trends. Up for public consumption, we now have the pleasure of ooh’ing, aah’ing or shaking our heads in disbelief at the fantastic world of wedding couture.USEcollage4
Whether your updos are all in order or your still fine-tuning sash colors and dress lengths, you’ll want to check out the Knot’s top trends for 2008.  According to The Knot, steel gray is replacing chocolate brown as the accent color. I have to agree; this is a lovely color and when they describe it as versatile, they are spot on…it goes with nearly everything.
As a lover of things vintage, I am excited to know that blasts from the distant past are making their way into weddings: jewelry, dresses, fabrics, etc.  (I was just in a wonderful antique store, pouring over their vintage wedding rings~ so gorgeous!)
From a fresh twist on the color white to tasting bars to metallic-colors, to~ wearing more than one wedding dress…?  Curious?  Read all about it!
What do you think of the above inspiration board?  Are you creating your own?

Selecting the Right Wedding Favors

Categories Inspiration + Wedding Stationery

Bestowing gifts on one’s wedding guests is a tradition that goes back a long way~ centuries in fact.  Initiating in Europe, the custom began with giving the guest a beautiful little box called a bonbonniere. These boxes could be decorated with precious stones and made from gold, crystal or porcelain and filled with sweet delicacies like bonbons. (I wonder if these wealthy Europeans were just showing off their wealth, or if they truly did appreciate their guests…hmm)
Eventually, this tradition spread across cultures and classes and the idea of offering a simple gift (now known as a wedding favor) was born and is alive and well today.  An array of wedding favor options await the bride and groom~ from personalized candy to crystal, and everything in between.

Isn’t this time-honored custom, of appreciating the wedding guest with a gift, a lovely expression of gratitude?  I’m sure that is why it has lasted so long.  Nowadays, there are many, many gift options available that you can choose out of your individual preference or to coordinate with the style or theme of your wedding.

Here are a couple of wedding favor ideas from MagnetStreet Weddings.
