Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!

Categories Inspiration

Did you know…
The traditional Irish toast is Sláinte which is Gaelic for “To your health!” (slawn-cha)…  and that Erin Go Bragh means Ireland Forever…
Can you see yourself honeymooning in a centuries-old castle?  If so, check out Ireland’s official website and explore the beauty, read about the people, the culture, the cities…
Are you Irish today or every day? It’s good to be Irish, so on that note…
Wherever you go and whatever you do,
May the luck of the Irish be there with you.

Smashing the Wedding Cake

Categories Fashion

Pat (MagnetStreet’s very own) and his lovely bride Molly, performing said ritual at their recent wedding.

Not too much damage done… it still looks like Molly got the best of you, Pat.
Too cute!

I took an informal poll around the office asking all of our married couples if they smashed the cake into their bride or groom’s face at their wedding… I was surprised~ neck and neck.  1/2 said “NO”  while 1/2 said “YES”

One comment I had to include... Matt said, “Not me, she looked too pretty.” (Aww)

What do you think?  To smash or not?

Balancing the Budget

Categories Budget

With the average engagement lasting around 17 months, there’s plenty of time to stock up on bridal books and salivate over sample bars and exotic flavorings in wedding cakes.  The wedding industry is big business and it’s up to you to balance your desires and must-haves, etc. while being mindful of your budget.  Egads, the “B” word… You no doubt have already learned that money can be a real hot button issue~ both before the wedding (and certainly after).

The internet and the amount of information it provides continues to amaze me.  What a fantastic resource for researching products and services (watching ridiculous videos and playing scrabble with somebody from Australia, etc.) That said, make sure that while you’re saving the date and delving into popular wedding trends, you’re also learning to compromise and deciding together what is truly important for your wedding.  Know yourselves.  Know your budget.  Stick to it (as best as you can, anyway).

The First Dance blog wrote the post  What I hate about wedding budget advice. In the author ’s opinion, most budgeting advice lacks the reason we NEED to find ways to shore up the budget (there’s so much out there to be enticed by). She clarifies what she means by telling the story of how she and her fiance’ put aside their preference for a “city” reception in order to make sure they met the comfort level of their “rural” guests.  In the end, they saved loads of money and were able to apply the savings to other areas of their wedding.

In this case, putting the comfort of their guests first, also turned out to be a great budgeting tip.

Save Money on Your Wedding Dress

Categories Budget + Inspiration + Resources
Admittedly, I love beautiful things~ I just don’t like to pay a lot of money for them and although some things are costly no matter what, usually whatever “they” are, can be found less expensively…somehow, somewhere.
Most couples-to-be have a budget to keep in mind as they are shopping for all things wedding related and the wedding gown has the potential to be one of the larger expenses. There are however, many ways to save on the wedding dress~ from shopping sample sales, to making your own, to buying used or consignment, to borrowing and even renting.  (Don’t you love having options? My own wedding dress was less than $200; I didn’t buy it at a bridal shop).
Gina, our Customer Care Rep. rented her wedding dress. I asked her a couple of questions about it~ wanting to understand the advantages and disadvantages.
Here’s what Gina had to say about renting her wedding dress:
Gina: The “Bridal Boutique” (where I rented from) was recommended by a friend who also happens to be an event planner. I could not believe how many bridesmaid dresses and bridal gowns she had. She offered several styles, colors and even the accessories. She measured me, did all the alterations and after the weekend of my wedding, I returned the bridal gown & head piece. The flat rate of $200 included everything. My dress was beautiful, I felt so comfortable. There weren’t any problems or mishaps at all. I can’t think of any disadvantages.
Heidi: Would you recommend that brides rent their dress? If so, why?
Gina: I wouldn’t only recommend this as an option, I would encourage it!  So many women have purchased wedding gowns for hundreds and even thousands of dollars only to have their gowns sit in a plastic bag.
Heidi: What about your daughter wearing it?
Gina: I do not regret, not having my wedding dress for my daughter to wear. I want her to choose a style/design that suits her- like my dress was for me.  I will encourage her to rent, because it’s a weekend celebration, dressed up like a princess for the day….the only thing that needs to last as long as your marriage should be your commitment & trust, not your wedding gown.
Heidi: Well said, friend.  Thanks Gina!
