Ways to Minimize Reception Costs

Categories Budget

Personally, I’m not in favor of cash bars at wedding receptions.  This is the first party you’re throwing together as husband and wife.  Would you charge if they came to your home for a party?  The reality however, is that reception costs (specifically alcohol costs) are a huge percentage of your budget.  Consider how important serving alcohol is to you.

Ways to minimize costs related to alcohol:

  • Hold your reception earlier: typically, people do not tend to drink a lot during the late morning, mid-day, early evening hours.
  • Ask permission to bring in your own alcohol (that you have found on sale or wholesale).
  • Limit the choices of alcohol: keg beer, signature cocktails, gallon wine
  • Set a time limit for an open bar.
  • Ask a friend to be barkeep rather than guests serving themselves
  • Don’t serve alcohol at all.

Of course, consider related factors i.e. do guests have to travel, are they spending the night, etc.?

Prioritize. Decide what aspects to the reception are most important and prioritize your budget from there.  Would you rather your guests be able to sip martinis all night or perhaps wear out their dancing shoes to really great music? Maybe delectable dishes are the most important feature…

So, what are your thoughts on cash bars?

15 Ways to a More Romantic, Comfortable, Uncluttered Bedroom

Categories Romance

Struggling together in a small space or wanting to maximize the space you have?  All it takes to revamp an area is a little creativity and time.  Some folks prefer to begin this organizational endeavor in the kitchen~ the center of activity but I’d prefer to start in the bedroom.  After all, we spend 2/3 1/3 of our lives there…it’s an important room!  Make it as romantic, comfortable and uncluttered  as possible.

I love the above image of the bedroom for the sake of simplicity. It has a clean, soft, organized look.  And, the natural and low level lighting are great for creating ambience.

Tips for Making Your Bedroom oh-so Romantic and Comfortable

  1. Say NO to dust and clutter!  Keep it clean.
  2. Lighting: Let in natural light, hang white lights, use candles (with fun holders that scatter the light), place battery operated lights in strategic places to create a mood.
  3. Soft, high quality bedding.  Lots of pillows.
  4. Pleasant scents (essential oils, potpourri, sometimes, just having your lotions out will work).
  5. Inspire yourself with a special color scheme, decorations, and memorabilia.

Tips for Organizing Your Bedroom and maximizing space:

First, pull up a chair in a corner of your bedroom where you can see each part of the room, including the closet.  What is bugging you?  Are there belts and scarves dropping to the closet floor?  Are you using your bedroom as an office?  Think about what you might need to do in order to achieve more organization in your bedroom:

  1. Closet organizing: Closet organizers that have double bars, cubbies and drawers truly do maximize space.  Also, stackable bins and hanging storage pockets, shoe organizers…
  2. Hang pegs and hooks. Use belt and tie hangers to rein in those stray accessories i.e. hats, scarves, etc.
  3. Use attractive baskets for catch-all items i.e. keys, buttons, notes etc.  (Go through every 1-2 weeks to put items in their proper places).
  4. Paint with soft colors to achieve a larger looking room.
  5. Minimize Trinket Collecting: the fewer trinkets you have, the less clutter, the less dusting!
  6. Purchase multi-use furniture that has built in storage i.e. night stand with drawers, benches with built-in storage, etc.
  7. Under the Bed: (I have a shoe rack that fits under my bed and has casters on it).  Store other items not currently using in containers
  8. Store your clothing based on the season.  In other words, if it’s summer, store your winter clothes in the cedar chest, under the bed in bins, or even in your empty suitcases.
  9. Use a jewelry case/armoire.
  10. If you’re not using it, give it away.  Let someone else benefit from the item.

Get creative! There are other uses for many things that were initally created to serve one purpose.  I’ve found interesting hook racks, baskets, jars, etc. at garage sales and antique stores for organizing and storing items).  Before you run out and buy something, invent some new way to use something you already own, for inventive storage or organization.

The Coolest, Most Romantic Wedding Proposal

Categories Inspiration + Romance

I hinted to the story behind this hopelessly romantic photo in one of our very first blog posts… The guy on his knee proposing to this woman is Jake, and our guest blogger today. Jake’s proposal story is one of theeee coolest wedding proposals of all time. Enjoy the read!

“My wife is a very sentimental person and really loves pictures. We have scores of albums in our home that she enjoys going through from time to time. She would probably say that her most prized possessions are photographs. Knowing this about her, the idea of proposing to her and somehow getting it on film was born.
One of my best friends from college lives in Cleveland and he was willing to secretly tail Natalie and me as I proposed and take pictures of the days events. Because Natalie and I live in St. Paul, I thought it would be fun to kidnap Natalie for the day, fly down to Chicago, and propose to her in the WindyCity. My friend from Cleveland would then only have to drive half as far. He excitedly made the trip up from Cleveland to make our day really special.
The night before the big day, I told Natalie to be ready at 6 AM for a surprise “field trip”. Her excitement for the surprise field trip was curtailed by having great disdain for the early morning. Despite not being an early riser, she was ready to go on time.
After a quick flight from the Twin Cities down to Chicago our “engagement day” began. My friend Joey from Cleveland was awaiting our arrival at pre-determined breakfast stop called the Original Pancake House (Natalie’s favorite breakfast place). While we ate breakfast, Joey, whom my wife had never met, was sitting two tables away reading the paper and snapping a few pictures of us.
From there we ventured over to Lake Michigan and walked out onto a Pier. It was a beautiful clear morning and it was very quiet (probably because it was winter). Out on the pier Natalie and I talked for awhile which ensured that Joey would have time to get into position to take pictures. I proposed out on the pier and she thankfully said yes. Joey was able to capture the entire sequence of events from a great vantage point. Natalie didn’t have a clue.
For the rest of the day we meandered our way throughout the city. We shopped on Michigan Avenue, ate lunch atop the John Hancock tower and experienced Chicago together just a few days before Christmas. The entire day Joey tailed us and captured every moment with tons of great candid pictures. Joey even went as far as changing clothes multiple times to ensure that Natalie wouldn’t recognize this strange person who just happened to be everywhere we went.
After running around the city together for most of the day, we headed back to the airport to catch our flight home. As luck would have it, Northwest Airlines bumped Natalie and me up to first class for the ride home which was a nice touch. Upon arriving home, Natalie really wanted to head straight to her parents house to share all the details. However, I had arranged for all of our families and close friends to be at a restaurant in Minneapolis for a “surprise engagement party.” Natalie was thrilled about the party and was able to show off her new ring and share all of the details with her closest friends.
It truly was a fun, exciting day!
In Natalie’s mind, the day was over (albeit a great day) and now she could begin planning her special day. The next day, Joey sent me digital pictures of our engagement day. He had taken over one hundred pictures and did a marvelous job of capturing the day. I took these pictures and printed them out and created a hard cover book for Natalie. I wrote captions on each page and described to her where Joey was during each part of the day.
I gave her the finished product for Christmas (just five days after we got engaged). She was completely surprised and had absolutely no idea that we were being followed the entire day. She loves the book and had a great time sharing it with friends and family for weeks to come.”

Thanks Natalie and Jake for sharing your oh-so-romantic wedding proposal with the world!

I’m All for Tree-Free, but what about the Monarch?

Categories Inspiration

I’m all for tree-free alternatives and taking care of the environment but using milkweed as an alternative?  Admittedly, milkweed springs up in abundance all over my yard, rooting itself in between flowers and plants, showing no mercy to its petaled neighbors and ruthlessly growing where it wants to, without need for boundaries.  Yes, it’s out of control and a veritable pain in the rump.

BUT, Monarch butterflies (that gorgeous insect we all know and love that migrates and lives all over this hemisphere) lay their eggs on the milkweed plant.  The eggs hatch and then feed off this same plant.  The above photo is from my garden, taken this weekend (notice the cute, little egg).

I once had the experience of literally witnessing a monarch butterfly deliver her egg right in front of me onto a milkweed plant. If that isn’t amazing enough, I watched this (dare I say, miraculous and cooler than cool) event with a small child.  Once you witness the delivery of a monarch egg, you become a little fanatical about their welfare!

As such, I cannot remove any milkweed plant from the garden without thoroughly checking every leaf for eggs.  I’ll even bring in eggs throughout the summer so I can continue my fascination with hatching, feeding, watching them grow and of course, setting them free. So, is it any wonder I cannot fully get behind this tree-free alternative that claims to help the enviroment?

Before jumping onto the recycled Milkweed bandwagon, can we be assured that the precious cargo of the Monarch won’t be forever vulnerable when their home is metamorphisized into a cocktail napkin or an enclosure card? Hmm…
